November 16th, 1776
The Brig “Andrew Doria” approaches the roads at St. Eustatius, deploys the red and white striped Continental Colors and fires a salute of thirteen guns. On the insistence of the Governor, Johannes de Graaff, the commander of the fort replies with 11 guns. These shots would echo around the world! Thus starts the rise of a Super Power and the beginning of the end for the tiny island of St. Eustatius which would be made to pay dearly for her support of the American cause. To commemorate these events the Golden Rock Regatta is to be held annually to focus attention on this forgotten outpost of a bygone age.

St. Kitts 14 November 2007

St. Kitts 14 Nov 2007. Team V.O.C. (Very Odd Crew) under the able leadership of Bas Roorda were first across the line in Frigate Bay, St. Kitts thus winning the Statia to St. Kitts Pursuit Race. On this mainly upwind race they managed to work their way through the fleet and negate the 22 minute handicap in a Race lasting 5 hours! DLA Piper finished 2˝ minutes later followed by Team Truple (another minute later), Team Ligthart Communicatie (4 more minutes!) and Team Flevomare (20 seconds later!). Four different boat types had finished within 7 minutes!

Bas Roorda with his newly formed team of odd crewmen, entered the regatta in the spirit of the old V.O.C. (Dutch East India Company) flying the old company flag in deference to those pioneering spirits of yesteryear, whose commerce saw the Dutch setting up trading posts all over the world!

Team V.O.C. are newcomers to the Golden Rock Regatta and they received a fitting prize for their win on St. Kitts, once more the V.O.C. had control of the world!!!! (Regatta sponsor Little Switzerland had donated two globes of the world to celebrate the opening of their new branch on St. Kitts, bringing the number branches in the Caribbean to 19! The day’s win clinched their overall result as winners of the Bareboat Class. ore and more locals are getting involved in the celebrations.
